International best-selling authors join The Gathering 2009

International best-selling authors Alexander McCall Smith and Diana Gabaldon are joining the other big names in contemporary Scottish culture who are taking part in The Gathering 2009, such as musicians Dougie MacLean, Capercaillie and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

Alexander McCall Smith, whose works include the Scotland Street series, and Diana Gabaldon, the American creator of the Outlander series of historical novels about an 18th century Highlander Jamie Fraser are just two of a host of writers, historians and genealogists who will be speaking in the Scotland Lives auditorium.

Diana Gabaldon said: "I'm thrilled to have been invited to take part in what promises to be a remarkable event. As Lord Sempill graciously said when inviting me, and mentioning Alexander McCall Smith's participation, ‘Well, this is very appropriate; we'll have an American who writes about Scotland, and a Scotsman who writes about Africa!’ It is indeed appropriate to the very expansive and hospitable spirit of the Scots, who have historically welcomed all visitors to cross their doorsteps and I’m sure everyone will find a warm welcome and have a wonderful time in Edinburgh."

Talisker Taste Experience

Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky will be making the journey from the shores of the Isle of Skye to Holyrood Park as part of the Talisker Taste Experience which will offer whisky tastings throughout the weekend. There will also be three master classes each day led by world-renowned whisky experts Charles MacLean, Dave Broom and Colin Dunn.

Charles and Dave will be introducing Diageo's Single Malt Whisky Flavour Map - an exciting innovation in how to consistently define, describe and talk about the different flavours of single malt whiskies. As Dave says: “Whisky isn’t complicated, it has just never been explained properly.”

Sponsored by Diageo, Scotland's leading Scotch whisky distillers, adults can take part in tastings in the Talisker Taste Experience by purchasing a ticket costing £5 from the Experience marquee; entrants must already have a passport or Highland Games ticket. Also included in the entrance fee, participants will receive their own limited-edition commemorative nosing glass from Glencairn Crystal. There is also a retail area within the Experience run by Royal Mile Whiskies.

Masterclasses are available for all those attending the Talisker Taste Experience, but spaces are limited so please sign up as early as possible on the day. For full details of the tastings and the programme of masterclasses, click here.
